Metallica es una banda de thrash metal creada en Los Ángeles en 1981 por el danés Lars Ulrich y el californiano James Hetfield y que a partir de 1983 tuvo su base en San Francisco. Hasta la fecha han editado nueve discos de estudio y son considerados parte de los Cuatro Grandes del thrash metal, junto con Anthrax, Slayer y Megadeth. Han conseguido números premios: nueves Grammys, dos premios de la cadena MTV, dos galardones de la American Music Award, un premio de la revista Billboard y una estrella en el Paseo de la Fama de la revista Kerrang!

Esta canción Nothing else Matters  es una bonita balada que lanzaron como tercer single del quinto álbum Metallica el 20 de abril dfe 1992. La compuso uno de los fundadores, cantante y guitarrista, James Hetfield, mientras hablaba con su novia por teléfono. Habla de estar cerca a pesar de estar lejos, indicando los lazos que compartían incluso cuando Hetfield estaba de gira. En un principio la compuso para sí mismo pero cuando Ulrich la escuchó la escogió para el álbum.

Axl Rose ha cumplido esta semana 51 años  (Lafayette, Indiana, EE UU, 6 de febrero de 1962). Tuvo una infancia muy difícil. Empezó a tocar el piano a muy corta edad y a estar relacionado con la música. Durante su adolescencia y tras descubrir quien fue su verdadero padre se convirtió en un joven delincuente arrestado 22 veces por intoxicación pública y robo.  Un psiquiatra observó su alto cociente intelectual  y concluyó que su comportamiento era una prueba de psicosis. Desde 1982 vivó en Los Ángeles.  Perteneció a varios grupos hasta que en marzo de 1985 con su amigo Tracii Guns formaron  Guns & Roses por la fusión de sus bandas.  Depués de grabar otras canciones lanzaron su álbum debut  Apetite for  destruction en julio de 1987.  El grupo desapareció a principios de los 90 y reapareció con una nueva formación, que seguía liderada por Axl Rose, en 2001.

Esta canción November Rain es la décima y primer sencillo del tercer álbum del grupo Use your illusion (septiembre, 1991) y trata una relación temperamental. Al parecer Axl Rose estuvo trabajando en ella, con su piano, desde 1983. Es la canción más larga en llegar al top 20 del Billboard Hot 100 y tiene el solo de guitarra (Slash) en la sexta posición de Los 100 mejores solos de guitarra por Guitar World.

Hoy cumple 57 años Eddie Van Halen (nacido el 26 de enero de 1955 en Nimega, Países Bajos). El año 1967 su familia se trasladó a California, donde su padre, músico de Jazz, Jan Van Halen, ayudó a que él y su hermano  fueran músicos y ambos fueron, durante muchos años, concertistas de piano.

También guitarrista y fundador de la banda de hard-rock Van Halen, es considerado uno de los mejores guitarristas de todos los tiempos. Van Halen como grupo fue descubierto por  Gene Simmons (bajista de KISS) que financió sus primeras grabaciones.

Esta canción “You really got me” (que ya era éxito del grupo británico “The Kings”) forma parte del álbum debut de esta banda, alrededor de 1978, que fue homónimo (Van Halen) y que tuvo otros grandes éxitos entre el resto de sus canciones.

Este mes, el  día 8, David Bowie cumplió  66 años así que yo le hago desde aquí mi pequeña dedicación a éste que es uno de mis favoritos, desde siempre. En los años 80 tuve la suerte de ir a un concierto suyo y en aquella ocasión estuve todo le cerca que pude del escenario ¡cómo me gustó!

Figura importante de la música durante más de cinco décadas, Bowie es considerado un innovador, en particular por sus trabajos de la década de los 70 y por su particular voz, además de la profundidad intelectual de su obra.
